Summer Trip Flying EVA Air Business Class on 777 & Hello Kitty Jet, Singapore Airlines Suites & Cathay Pacific First Class

Last summer, I traveled to the Philippines for the 70th birthday celebration of my father. It was a very short visit since I needed to be back home for work. I've always wanted to try EVA Air's Hello Kitty Jet so I booked my flight from Stockholm to Fukuoka using Avianca Lifemiles. From Fukuoka, I flew on a budget carrier to Tokyo, and from Tokyo I flew on Singapore Airlines Suites to Singapore, and then first class to Manila using my Kris Flyer Miles. On my way back to Stockholm, I flew on Cathay Pacific First Class and Finnair Business Class using my AA Advantage Miles. This trip allowed me to test EVA Air Hello Kitty, Singapore Suites and Cathay Pacific First Class all for the first time and I couldn't be more satisfied.

Singapore Changi Airport

Arriving around 3am at Singapore Changi Airport, I went straight to the First Class Lounge and stayed there until about 5am, after which I transferred to the Singapore Airlines Private Room which is exclusively for Suites and First Class passengers flying on Singapore Airlines.

Boarding, gate E28

After enjoying my stay at the First Class Lounge Terminal 2, I headed to Gate E28 shortly before 9am. There was already a long queue when I arrived but fortunately, the security check went faster than I anticipated.

As usual, there was a separate jet bridge for premium passengers.

Cabin

The first class cabin has a total of 8 seats on a 1-2-1 configuration. Half of the cabin on that day was occupied. Upon boarding, I was welcomed by Mr. Kuma, the Cabin Supervisor and a young male flight attendant. Alice then came and introduced herself and told me that she would be taking care of my side of the cabin, as she led me to my seat.

Seat, 1F

Welcome to my seat, 1F! Mike and I flew on Singapore Airlines last year from Singapore to Bandar Seri Begawan in First Class and had the same seats so apparently these are their regional first seats which are very spacious and comfortable.

As for my predeparture beverage, I settled for a glass of lemon water.

The first class seat was very spacious and had more than enough legroom.

The reading lamp and headphone jack were also located on the left side of the seat.

While "inspecting" my seat, I was also offered some newspapers and took Manila Bulletin, and later was presented the menu. After having a look at the menu, Alice came back to take my order although I had to remind her of my main course which I had ordered from their "Book The Cook" service. Mr. Kuma came to my seat to welcome me again on the flight. Shortly after, I was given the immigration form to be filled up.

Business Class Seat

Since the business class cabin was located just behind the first class cabin, I asked Alice if I could have a look and was allowed to do so without any problem. Although not as spacious as the first class seats, I thought they were still wider than most of what other airlines offer.

As we taxied to the runway, I caught sight of Singapore Airlines A380 painted with the special livery to celebrate Singapore's 50th. The captain also came to the PA to inform us of a delay due to earlier planes deviating from the regular path to avoid the storm.

Shortly after the seat belt sign was turned off, Alice came to my seat and unwrapped the slippers and placed them in front of me ready to use. That's what I call superb service!

Dining

The first class champagne was the 2004 Dom Perignon 👍

Then, it was time for my apple juice to be served. The captain once again came to the PA and informed us of the turbulence and that flight attendants would need to wait for awhile before serving hot beverages.

After the turbulence has subsided, I was served some warm nuts and green tea.

Then it was time for the table set up. Out of curiosity, I decided to check which china are being used by Singapore Airlines on this route. The answer: Wedgwood 👍

Fruit
Selection of sliced fresh fruits

Appetizer
Fruit Yogurt

From the Bakery
Croissant

Shortly after finishing my yogurt, the captain came again to the PA and informed us that the meal service would be interrupted due to bad weather. I thought Alice really did a great job because in a less than a couple of minutes, she came to my seat and served my main course. I  was guessing it would have been a long wait for me had she not done that since the turbulence lasted for quite some time.

The other choices from the menu were:

Pork and Century Egg Congee
Griddled Coconut Pancakes
Selection of Dim Sum
Fresh Eggs with choice of Chicken Sausage or Smoked Salmon

My lobster was perfect that I really had to commend the chef for that. Alice upon noticing that the table cloth has gotten dirty (as I spilled some sauce) came with a new one and changed it. Impressive!

Dessert
Warm Cream of Walnut

After enjoying my meal, Alice came with the duty free items I ordered from the internet, as well as some giveaways including playing cards, writing pad and pen and two Singapore Airlines bears!

Landing at NAIA

View of Manila, minutes before landing

We landed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 about ten minutes behind of schedule due to bad weather. As a first class passenger, I was one of those who disembarked first.

Unfortunately, one of the four wheels of my checked baggage was missing when I picked it up from the designated belt. I approached the agents from Singapore Airlines and after filling up some forms, I was told that they would send someone to pick up my luggage the following day. As promised, my luggage was repaired and delivered to me after a few days.

CONCLUSION

It was my first time to fly to Manila in First Class and I was glad I flew on Singapore Airlines. The food was excellent and the service was just exceptional that I couldn't ask for more. Although I was a bit frustrated when I found out that my checked in baggage was damaged despite flying in Suites/First Class, I was still glad that it had been taken care of well by Singapore Airlines. To all the crew on this flight specially to Alice, thank you so much 😍

  1. Hi! I think the flight details were incorrect, as they seem to be coming from Tokyo to Singapore? :)

  2. Hi Deevs! I double checked it and I can see that SIN-MNL was on SQ 910. They uses A380 from Los Angeles to Singapore via Tokyo and that's where the flight numbers are the same, ie SQ11. Thanks for reading my blog/Arthur

  3. Thanks for the clarification. I was just confused as I read it Tokyo to Singapore, yet the flight in general was SIN - MNL. Anyway I enjoyed your review as this is the first comprehensive flight report I have read about the First class flights that SQ caters to Manila.

I am still waiting to bite the bullet, so to speak, to book that First Saver award flight MNL-SIN so this is a good eye-opener. Thanks!

    1. Hi Deevs! My apologies. Yo were right as I have mistakenly written Tokyo-Singapore on the details. I've rectified it now! Goodluck on your redemption on SQ and thanks again for the correction!
